Marekebisho Media Awards Themes

Journalists and correspondents interested in to enter the Marekebisho Media Award Scheme are invited to submit entries that cover one or more of the following GJLOS reform priorities:

Governance Reforms:

This theme covers reform efforts focusing on improved governance, ethics, integrity and the ongoing fight against corruption across the sector.

Human Rights Reforms:

This theme covers reform efforts focusing on increased respect for human rights through empowering the poor, marginalized and vulnerable members of society, by promoting rights-based approaches and practices across the sector. 

Justice Reforms:

This theme covers reform efforts that promote equal access to justice for all, including reforms aiming to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the criminal- and civil justice systems, including reducing pre-trail detention and the use of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms. 

Law and Order Reforms:

This theme covers reform efforts focusing on broader police and penal reforms, including issues of crime prevention, community policing and rehabilitation of offenders. 

Reform-Oriented Capacity Building:

This theme covers reform efforts that seek to build the capacity of the participating GJLOS Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDA’s) through the professionalisation of staff with a strong emphasis on improving service delivery to the public through attitude and culture change.

Categories of Awards

  • There are two main categories - electronic and print.(Articles  published on the internet  must have  a wide  Kenyan audience).
  • Each category will have a first, second and third position.

There will also be a special merit award for winners in each of the five award themes mentioned above

Admission Criteria

  • The Marekebisho Media Award  Scheme is open to staff and correspondents of all media houses in Kenya.
  • Only contributions published by  mass circulating  local,  regional  or national newspaper  or  broadcast  by  a   local, regional  national  TV/Radio station in Kenya,  are eligible.
  • Only articles published or broadcast on or between January 1, 2007 and May 31 2007 will be considered.
  • Articles must focus  on one  or more  of the Award themes mentioned above-(governance; human rights; justice; law and order reforms;  and reform oriented  capacity building).
  • Entries must be submitted to the address provided here below on or before May, 31, 2007. 

Adjudication Criteria 

Each individual entry will be judged on the general criteria below.

  1. Contribution to new knowledge previously not in the public domain
  2. Credibility and diversity of the sources of information used
  3. Relevance to  the Award  themes
  4. Analytical treatment of the subject  matter
  5. Originality of the contribution
  6. Factual integrity of the information disseminated
  7. Balance of coverage in cases of strong views
  8. Contribution to help solve an issue of public interest

Format

    1. For Print Media, a copy of the published article should be submitted.
    2. For Electronic Media a VHS/DVD/CD ROM/Audio tape   for visual or audio material should be submitted with details of date, time and channel of broadcast.

Prizes

 The proposed prizes per category are

  1. First - Ksh 100,000  
  2. Second - Ksh 75,000  
  3. Third - Ksh 50,000
  4. Merit Award - Ksh 25,000.

Award Ceremony

Awards will be presented during a gala event in June 2007 in Nairobi.
